The Legacy of Percy Gray

Carmel Art Association

Exhibition catalogue
Available through the Carmel Art Association

The Percy Gray exhibition, presented in its entirety in this volume, showed Gray's vision as an artist. He found inspiration in the California landscape and his art expressed that emotional response to nature. The quiet solitude of his paintings serves as recorded history — a reminder that the expanse of the California landscape has begun to disappear, and that each year it becomes more important to protect and preserve it.

E. Charlton Fortune

1885 – 1969

Exhibition catalogue
Available through the Carmel Art Association

A renowned painter of landscapes and harbour scenes, E. Charlton Fortune is recognised as one of the most significant painters in the history of California art, and has become one of the most sought-after women painters of the West. She was an early member of the Carmel Art Association when it was founded in 1927.

Born in Sausalito, Fortune studied at Edinburgh College of Art and in London before returning to California in 1905. By 1913 she was dividing her time between San Francisco and Monterey. In the mid-1930s she left landscape painting to found the Monterey Guild, dedicated to reviving ecclesiastical art.

Both catalogues accompanied exhibitions Janet curated at the Carmel Art Association. She authored The Legacy of Percy Gray, and is one of the contributing writers to E. Charlton Fortune, 1885–1969, which carries an introduction by Dr William H. Gerdts. Both are available from the CAA bookstore, on Dolores Street between 5th and 6th in Carmel-by-the-Sea, open daily 10am – 5pm. They ship by media mail; call or text 831.250.3347.
