Contemporary California Art, Rooted in Place

Originally established in 2003 on the Plaza in Healdsburg, J. Howell Fine Art has long been dedicated to showcasing the creativity and diversity of contemporary California artists. In 2025, we relocated to Mendocino, where our search for a new home to continue our dedication to representing California artists led us to Den Modern.

We are delighted to collaborate with Lisa Haines, who has thoughtfully curated a beautiful and distinctive space filled with vintage objects and interesting things for the home. Together, J. Howell Fine Art and Den Modern offer a unique setting where art and design come together in an inviting, inspiring environment.

J. Howell Fine Art exhibits original paintings, works on paper, and sculpture by contemporary California artists. The collection encompasses vivid Impressionist and plein-air landscapes, richly hued figurative works, vibrant abstracts, and expressive ceramics—artwork that reflects the remarkable landscapes, light, color, and creative spirit of California.
