About the artist

The ‘sharing’ has been in the realms of teaching and in developing products and retail environments—including galleries and design shops—beginning in 1967 when he opened a small toy shop in Santa Monica, CA, specializing in hand-made playthings.

In the early 1960s, Maynard worked for several architects (on both coasts) and was Director, Product Development at Forms&Surfaces (Santa Barbara, CA) and in the early 1970s was Director, Product Development at Creative Playthings (Princeton, NJ).

Maynard has been ‘drawing+painting’ and ‘inventing+model-making’ since childhood—encouraged by both parents and by siblings to ‘look+learn+create+share’.

With his wife and partner Lu Wendel Lyndon, Maynard has founded and operated several design companies, including Placemakers, Placewares, LyndonDesign, and LyndonDesign Gallery. (They met in 1972 at Design Research—the iconic American design stores—where both were Managers; and soon jointly opened their own design business in 1975.)
